Maho Beach: The World-Famous Aircraft Spotting Paradise

Maho Beach stands as one of the Caribbean’s most exhilarating experiences. Located directly adjacent to Princess Juliana International Airport’s runway 10/28, this small stretch of sand offers a spectacle found nowhere else on earth.

The Experience

Heavy jets from KLM, American Airlines, Delta, and charter carriers make their final approach at an altitude of just 10–15 meters above the beach. The jet blast from departing aircraft is powerful enough to send unsuspecting beachgoers tumbling — a danger sign posted at the beach fence is no exaggeration.

Best Times to Visit

• Midday to 2pm: Peak international arrivals from Amsterdam, New York, and Miami
• 4pm–6pm: Departure wave creates spectacular jet blast moments

Practical Information

The Sunset Beach Bar directly on the flight path has departure boards and serves excellent rum punches. The bar’s rooftop is prime spotting territory.

Note: After Hurricane Irma’s damage in 2017, the airport and beach area have been fully rebuilt and are operating normally.

Safety Warning

Never hang on the fence during departures. The blast from a 737 or A330 can knock an adult off their feet and has caused serious injuries.
